Top 5 James McAvoy movies - DeWinter

Okay this is a hard one. I love me some Hot Scots and Mr. McAvoy is no exception to the rule. However, I own pretty much like 75% of his movies, maybe more, not just because he’s nice to look at, but also because the man is a great actor and he makes incredible films…So here it is, folks, in no particular order. Also, it should be said I know that there are a lot of great films that didn’t make this list, and I love all of them as well, but these are the ones that have stood out to me.

1. Penelope
Not only an adorable movie and one of my all time favorites (don’t even get me started on how awesome I find Peter Dinklage or Catherine O’Hara because we will be here for HOURS), James is full on swoon worthy as Penelope’s mysterious suitor. His Max is quirky, endearing, and flawed. Pair the undeniable chemistry between him and Christina Ricci, throw in gorgeous visuals, a sweet fairy tale, and you have this delicious, frothy cocktail of a movie. Go rent it if you haven’t seen it already. Seriously.
2. The Last King of Scotland
James McAvoy turns in an incredibly nuanced and understated performance as Nicholas Garrigan in this powerful piece about the monstrous dictator, Idi Amin. It was Forrest Whitaker who won an Oscar for his incredible embodiment of Idi Amin, but it would be a mistake to overlook James McAvoy’s equally stunning performance as a man who is struggling to retain his humanity in a world that is rapidly disintegrating around him.
3. Starter for Ten
This movie is just a lot of fun. Brian Jackson has always wanted to be on University Challenge, a British quiz show in the 1980’s. He goes to university on a scholarship and meets two very different women there: smart, sarcastic Rebecca who has a soft spot for Brian and gorgeous Alice who is Brian’s dream girl. You pretty much know whom he’ll end up with in the first half-hour, but watching him get there is a ton of fun. Plus this movie has a fantastic ‘80’s soundtrack!
4. Becoming Jane
This movie never ceases to make me cry. Anyone who knows anything about Jane Austen knows that she died unmarried at the age of 41; however, you’ve never seen Jane Austen like this. This is the story of her when she’s young and just starting out with her writing. She meets idealistic, cocky law student Tom LeFroy and while the two of them initially dislike each other, it doesn’t take long before they’ve completely fallen in love. The chemistry between Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy is palpable and the movie itself is absolutely beautiful. However, don’t watch this unless you are in the mood for a tearjerker.
5. Rory O’Shea Was Here
Again, don’t watch this movie if you aren’t in the mood for something sad. However, James McAvoy turns in an incredible performance as a man who is living with a debilitating disease who takes a shy severely handicapped man under his wing. Under Rory (James McAvoy)’s tutelage, the man soon begins to blossom. It’s smartly written and a truly inspiring movie.
